Realism
Realism emerged in the nineteenth century as a refusal of idealization, insisting that ordinary life, labor, and contemporary society were worthy subjects for serious painting. Instead of heroic myth or sentimental polish, Realist artists often focused on workers, rural life, and unembellished physical presence. Its power lies in its frankness: the movement asks viewers to confront the dignity, weight, and social reality of everyday existence.
