Abstract Expressionism
Abstract Expressionism made scale, gesture, and emotional intensity central to postwar painting, even when recognizable subject matter disappears. Some artists emphasized action and process, while others pursued immersive fields of color, but both approaches treated the canvas as a place of direct confrontation between artist, material, and viewer. The movement's force comes from this sense of risk and immediacy, where painting becomes an event as much as an image.
