Henri Matisse
1869-1954
Matisse was one of the great colorists of modern art, using bold, simplified forms and luminous color to create an art of balance, pleasure, and emotional clarity. As a leader of Fauvism he helped free color from natural description, and throughout his career he treated line, decoration, and pattern as structural forces rather than embellishment. His work often feels serene, but that serenity is carefully built, the result of relentless experimentation with how painting can become both intense and effortless.
