Matisse was one of the great colorists of modern art, using bold, simplified forms and luminous color to create an art of balance, pleasure, and emotional clarity. As a leader of Fauvism he helped free color from natural description, and throughout his career he treated line, decoration, and pattern as structural forces rather than embellishment.
